July 18, 2017 – The State Board of Education has released an updated draft of the state plan for complying with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). As part of ESSA, the state must detail to the U.S. Department of Education how it plans to spend more than $2.5 billion in funds for high-need students. The State Board of Education differs with many civil rights advocates on how detailed this state plan needs to be. The article mentions that the state “will meet the law’s requirements by answering what’s asked, but volunteering little more.” Liz Guillen, Public Advocates’ Director of Legislative and Community Affairs is mentioned in the story.
