January 8. 2021 – John Fensterwald reports on Governor Newsom’s budget announcement and the details he gave about the state’s commitment to making a major investment into education. Public Advocates’ John Affeldt is quoted. Fensterwald wrote that confident of a continued economic recovery from Covid recession, Gov. Newsom presented a record $89.2 billion for K-12 schools and community colleges next year that will provide billions in additional revenue and new spending — plus 3% more for the University of California and the California State University. John Affeldt’s quote concerns how the funds would be spent, “It will be important that this investment avoids traditional drill and kill summer school remediation and instead provides students with innovative, rich and engaging learning opportunities this summer and into next year. As well, these funds should be used to address the critical social-emotional and mental health needs of students.”
